Stockman Named Scholar-Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS -- Emily Stockman has been selected one of the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.  Stockman was honored for her performance during the period of October 19-25.

Now in its 11th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies.  On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

An outside hitter for the Wichita State volleyball team, Stockman, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., earned Missouri Valley Conference offensive player-of-the-week laurels after leading the Shockers to a sweep of second-place Missouri State on Oct. 23.

Stockman, who has a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in exercise science, posted her 11th double-double of the 2009 season with a match-high 16 kills and a team-best 18 digs.  She averaged 5.33 kills, 6.0 digs and 5.33 points per set while hitting .368 on the left side.

To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.  Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible.  In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
