WICHITA -- Women's Basketball freshman guard, Jessica Diamond has been named WSU Athlete of the Week. Diamond averaged a team-best 13.5 points per game in helping Wichita State extend its winning streak to three games after picking up a pair of wins at home against La Salle and South Dakota.
Diamond, who comes into the week third among MVC freshmen in scoring, has scored in double-digits in every game this season, and poured in a season-best 17 points in WSU's win over South Dakota on Sunday. The Houston native shot 60-percent from the field against the Coyotes, and finished up shooting nearly 43-percent on the week, including a 50-percent clip from three-point range.
The freshman point-guard took charge, leading the Shocker offense to its second-best performance of the season on Sunday, while contributing two rebounds and 1.5 assists per game as well, helping WSU wrap up the month of November with a 3-1 record.
The Shockers, at 3-1, are off to an identical start as last year as WSU opened the 2008-09 season with a 3-1 record before falling in game five. Two of the last three times a Shocker team has started the year 3-1, they have ended the season with a winning record.
WSU will go for its fourth-straight win on Wednesday against Loyola (Ill.). The Shockers have not won four-straight since late 2005 and have not won four-straight non-conference games since 1998. Wichita State wraps up its season-best five game homestand on Friday, giving the Shockers a chance to win five-straight for the first time since 2003.
