ST. LOUIS - Shocker sophomore Delia Damaschin was named the Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week by the Missouri Valley Conference after her 4-0 combined singles and doubles performance against a pair of ranked teams during the week of Feb. 1-7.
Damaschin led No. 74 Wichita State against two powerful teams this week as the Shockers traveled to Utah to take on No. 65 BYU and No. 61 Utah. Matched up with senior Stephanie Dalmacio for the first time in their careers, the duo went undefeated at the No. 1 doubles spot. The pair beat BYU's nationally-ranked No. 18 doubles tandem of McCall Jones and Megan Price, 8-5 on Thursday and Utah's Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan, 8-6 on Friday afternoon. In singles competition, Damaschin stepped up in the No. 3 position to notch the Shocks' only victory against BYU. She defeated Chie Hayasaka, 6-1, 1-6, 10-4. In Salt Lake City, Damaschin took out Utah's Paige Miles in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
The Onesti, Romania native was chosen over qualified Valley nominees: Manca Krizman, Drake; Kate Chybowski, Evansville; Julia Zubkova, Illinois State.
Damaschin and the Shockers open their home schedule on Saturday when they play host to the Nittany Lions of Penn State.
