CHARLESTON, S.C.- Junior Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul defeated
Katherine Scholfield in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch Wichita State's 5-2
victory over College of Charleston on Monday at the College of Charleston
Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The Shocker women gained an early advantage in the doubles
competition. First Rebecca Pedrazzi and Carla Venticinque defeated Samantha
Maddox and Kelly Kambourelis, 8-3, then Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova
took down Irene Viana and Katherine Schofield, 8-4 to put Wichita State up 1-0.
Before Mahajaroenkul clinched the match, Lucia Kovalova
defeated Kelly Kambourelis after she retired after the second set and Montse
Blasco Fernandez defeated Samantha Maddox, 6-4, 6-2. Julia Schiller also won at
the No. 3 position over Brooke McAmis, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.
"It was a very strong team win, and great competition across
the board regardless of the scores," head coach Colin Foster said. "We had a
few matches that we were behind in against gritty competitors and we didn't
give an inch."
The Shockers will head to Columbia, Mo. on Sunday, March 24
for a match against No. 75 Missouri at 12 p.m.
