WICHTA, Kan.- The No. 74 Wichita State men's tennis team will head to Norman, Okla. on Friday, May 10 to take on No. 14 Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
Oklahoma (19-6, 6-1) captured its second straight Big 12 Tournament title with a 4-2 victory over Baylor on Sunday, April 28, avenging their only Big 12 regular season loss.
Senior Costin Paval at the No. 1 singles position leads the Sooners with a record of 17-4 overall. Paval comes in at No. 21 in the most recent ITA singles rankings. Junior Guillermo Alcorta (58), sophomore Dane Webb (64), and freshman Axel Alvarez Llamas (110) are also ranked in singles competition.
In doubles play, Paval and Webb have had a spectacular season with a 14-6 overall record at the No. 1 position. The duo comes in ranked No. 46 in the nation. Alvarez Llamas and Alcorta are also ranked by the ITA in doubles play at No. 68 and carry a record of 14-7 into their match against the Shockers on Friday.
Wichita State (17-7, 4-1) captured the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship with a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 27 Drake on Sunday, April 28 at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. MVC Freshman of the Year Tin Ostojic clinched the title for the Shockers when he defeated No. 120 Robin Goodman, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
In singles play, sophomore Erick Reyes has won 15 consecutive matches and has an overall record of 21-5 on the season. Senior Mathues Pereira, who competed in the NCAA Tournament for the Shockers during his freshman season, carries a singles record of 18-10 on the season, including 12-6 in dual matches.
Pereira and Ostojic captured the MVC All-Conference award at the No. 1 doubles position by posting of perfect 5-0 record in conference matches. The duo has an overall record of 20-3 on the season and has won eight consecutive matches.
The Shockers fell 7-0 to the then No. 8 Sooners in their first dual match of the season in Norman, Okla.
Friday's match has a first serve set for 2 p.m. and the winner will take on either Auburn or NC State on Saturday.
