WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State women's tennis team will head to Lincoln, Neb. on Friday, May 10 to take on No. 16 Nebraska in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Nebraska Varsity Courts.
Nebraska (22-5, 10-1) fell to No. 15 Northwestern 4-1 in the semifinals of the Big 10 Tournament on Saturday, April 27.
No. 11 Mary Weatherholt, who has only dropped one singles match on the season, leads the Cornhuskers. Her one loss came on March 21 to No. 83 Malika Rose of Oklahoma State, 4-6, 6-4, 5-7. She carries an overall record of 23-1 into the NCAA Tournament and is 11-1 against ranked opponents on the year.
In doubles play, Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova are ranked as the No. 3 doubles duo in the nation with a record of 19-3 on the season.
Wichita State (15-10, 7-0) captured their fifth consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday, April 28 with a 4-0 victory over Southern Illinois at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
Freshmen Julia Schiller and Rebecca Pedrazzi have been impressive in their first season as Shockers. They have a combined singles record of 34-17 on the season and went a combined 12-1 in MVC regular season play at the top two singles positions. Schiller has also won nine consecutive singles contests.
Juniors Montse Blasco Fernandez, Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul and Carla Venticinque, along with sophomore Lucia Kovalova have helped anchor the Shocker lineup throughout the season.
In doubles play, Pedrazzi and Venticinque went 6-0 in MVC play to capture the All-Conference award at the No. 2 position. Blasco Fernandez and Mahajaroenkul also went undefeated in conference action to take home the No. 3 doubles All-Conference honor. The two duos have each won nine out of their last ten matches.
Friday's match will begin at 2 p.m. and live stats will be available. Results will also be posted following the completion of play. The winnner will take on either Tulsa or UNLV on Saturday.
