• The Wichita State women’s basketball team returns to Charles Koch Arena for the 2009-10 home opener when the Shockers begin a five-game homestand by playing host to former conference foe Western Illinois at 7:05 p.m., Friday night in Wichita.

• The game will be broadcast live on KNSS 1330 AM with Brian Petrotta on the call. Fans can also listen worldwide through the web stream at ShockerRadio.com.

• Western Illinois comes into Friday’s matchup after winning, 50-47, at Northern Illinois on Tuesday night. They are led by Iola, Kan., native Leslie Crane, who coached at Circle High School from 1987-89. WSU has hosted the Leathernecks each of the last three seasons. WIU was a member of the Gateway Conference with WSU until 1992.

• WSU is 1-0 in home openers under head coach Jody Adams after defeating Colorado State in overtime to open her tenure at Wichita State last year. The Shockers are 23-12 all-time in home openers, and  have won three of their last four home tipoff contests.

• The Shockers’ loss at Colorado State was a common thread among the Valley on the opening weekend, as only Creighton and Indiana State made it through unscathed. Every other Valley team dropped at least one game on the opening weekend of play.

• Wichita State is 30-20 all-time against the Summit League, good for a .600 winning percentage against the conference.

• The Shockers will look to extend their two-game winning streak in non-conference home games, one that began with last year’s 65-46 win over WIU. WSU is 7-1 in non-conference home contests under Jody Adams, and 15-1 in the last 16 such games overall.

• Colorado State took 19 more free throws than the Shockers in Sunday’s loss in Fort Collins. That statistic has developed into a trend as WSU has attempted fewer free throws than its opponent in all 19 losses in the Jody Adams era.

• WSU’s nine-point lead early on against the Rams on Sunday was equal to the largest lead the Shockers posted against CSU last season. It was not the largest lead lost recently however, as WSU saw a 12-point edge wiped away at home against Kent State last year.
