Abella Named Assistant Coach

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State head volleyball coach Chris Lamb has announced the hiring of RJ Abella as an assistant volleyball coach.  Abella replaces Shannon Lamb, who is the program's new Director of Operations.

For the past two seasons, he has served as WSU's technical manager for volleyball.

Before coming to WSU, Abella played volleyball for three years at Newman University (NCAA DII) before the program was dropped in 2008. The team made the national tournament all three years and also finished in the top six in the nation each year.  He also coached the Newman women's volleyball team for a season.

He has coached at many camps including Wichita State, Rice, Newman and the USA Volleyball Heart of America Boys Regional camp.

Abella also worked on the Gold Medal Squared coaching staff and aided in scouting and evaluating opponents for the men's and women's national teams.

In 2009, he served as an assistant coach for the USA Women's A2 national team and was also on the USA Volleyball junior national high performance staff as an evaluator.

He was also the Volleyball Information Systems (VIS) Manager for USA Volleyball, which entailed stating and ranking players for all international matches involving the USA men's, women's and junior national teams played in the USA and reporting them to the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).

Abella earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Wichita State in 2009.
