WICHITA, Kan.- Fifth-year softball head coach Mike Perniciaro has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National-Letters-of-Intent to play softball at Wichita State. Sloan Anderson, Torrie Brown, Rachel Milnark will all join the program for the 2011 season.
“With the addition of Sloan, Torrie, and Rachel we have definitely added some depth to our team,” Perniciaro said. “Each of these young ladies has the qualities that we look for in our softball student-athletes. They are very skilled on the field, come from solid programs with winning traditions, and are also outstanding in the class room.”
Sloan Anderson is a left-handed pitcher from Glencoe High School in Hillsboro, Ore. In 2009, Anderson was a first team all-state selection along with being named the Northwest Oregon Conference pitcher of the year after going 28-3 with a 1.06 ERA. Her 215 strikeouts in 184 innings and .439 average at the plate helped lead GHS to a second place finish at the 5A state championships her junior season. Anderson has led the Crimson Tide to three-straight NWOC championships and a second place finish at state twice. She has a career record of 54-10 with 463 strikeouts and a 0.94 ERA. Anderson plays ASA softball with the Northwest Blaze and helped lead the team to the 2009 16U National Championship. In addition, Anderson has a 3.6 GPA and is ranked in the top third of her class.
“Sloan is a lefty pitcher who has great size and moves the ball extremely well,” Perniciaro said. “She is a proven winner and will be counted on to contribute right away.”
Torrie Brown is a first baseman/outfielder from Edmond Memorial High School in Edmond, Okla. Brown batted .396 for the Lady Bulldogs with nine RBI, eight doubles, and 29 runs scored in addition to a .975 fielding-percentage and was named mid-state honorable mention her senior season. In addition, Brown helped lead the Lady 'Dogs to city championships and regional runner-up finishes her freshman and sophomore seasons. Brown has a 3.75 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Soceity.
“Torrie has a great swing already and is only going to get better while she is here. She will play first base and the outfield,” Perniciaro said.
Rachel Milnark is a middle infielder from Lansing High School in Lansing, Kan. In 2009, Milnark helped lead the Lions with a .559 batting average, .985 slugging percentage, and .584 on-base percentage. For her efforts she has been named to the 5A all-state team all three years of high school. In addition, Milnark was named first-team all-metro her sophomore season and second-team all-metro her freshman and junior seasons by The Kansas City Star. Milnark has a 3.7 GPA and is a member of the National English Honor Society.
“I see Rachel fitting in well at second base or shortstop and adding a potent bat to the middle of the lineup,” Perniciaro said.
The Shockers open the 2010 season on Feb. 12 at the Centenary College Tournament in Shreveport, La.
