WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State
University women's basketball team was able to power through a subpar shooting
performance in a 56-43 win over the La Salle University Explorers Monday night
in Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers move to 2-1 on the season
while the Explorers drop to 1-4 on the year.
Junior Sheena Johnson led the home team
with 12 points while sophomore Haleigh Lankster and freshman Jessica Diamond
each had 10 points. Senior guard Marisah
Henderson had seven points, eight boards and two assists in the win.
Morgan Robertson led the Explorers with
11 points. Tara Lapetina registered nine
points and five boards in the loss.
Freshman Jazimen Gordon came off the
bench to add nine points for WSU.
The Shockers started off with a 5-2 lead
five minutes into the game and held the visiting team scoreless for the next
two minutes. La Salle added a pair on
free-throws by Antonia Gale only to see the Shockers bounce back and respond
with a bucket from Lankster.
Lankster tallied six points in the first
5:30 of the game to put the Shockers up 8-4.
The Explorers tied it up at 21 all with
1:39 remaining in first on a 5-0 run with the go-ahead basket coming from a
Jenna Gilbert free-throw. La Salle went
up by two on a Gale free-throw with just over a minute left only to have the
Shockers answer on a Johnson bucket to send the game into the break tied at 23.
Lankster led all scorers with 10 points
to go along with three steals. Henderson
recorded six boards and two points while Michelle Price came off the bench to
add five points.
Gale notched six points for the
Explorers.
Wichita State pulled ahead for good at
the 16:38 mark in the second half after both teams exchanged leads early
on. WSU went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead
37-29 and then used a 6-0 swing to register their first double-digit lead of
the game (45-34, 5:02 left in regulation).
Following a brief La Salle responce the
Shockers put the game away thanks to back-to-back baskets by Johnson and Gordon
as Wichita State cruised to the win.
La Salle shot only 30 percent from the
floor (12-of-39) and committed 27 turnovers in the contest.
The Shockers will return to action on
Sunday, Nov. 29, when they host the Coyotes of South Dakota. Tip-off is set for 2:05 p.m.
