Shocks Shut Down Bulldogs, 61-38

WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichtia State men's basketball team used a smothering defense that recorded nine blocks and held Drake (5-9, 0-2) to just 23-percent shooting en route to a 61-38 win on Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena.

Toure Murry led the Shockers (12-2, 1-1) with 11 points. David Kyles and Graham Hatch added nine points and eight points, respectively.

Josh Young paced the Bulldogs with nine points.

In the second half, both teams traded baskets until the 15:15 mark when the Shockers went on a 10-2 run to extend the lead to nine at the 13 minute mark.  David Kyles extended the lead to 11 on a breakaway lay up off a Hannah defensive rebound, 42-31, with 12:20 left.

Another Kyles lay up off a turnover and a Demetric Williams three-pointer at the 10:30 mark pushed  WSU's lead to its largest at 14, 47-33.
Back-to-back Drake buckets by VanDeest and Hawley closed the gap to 10, 47-37, with 7:29 remaining.

From 7:29 to the final two minutes, Wichita State put the game away with a 14-0 run.
In the first half, Wichita State took an 8-5 lead into the first media time out on 60 percent shooting to open the game compared to the 29 percent (2-7) Drake hit.

Both teams traded baskets to the 10:59 mark as WSU's lead stayed at three, 12-9.  The Shockers' 12 points came from six different players.

WSU extended the lead to 16-9 at the 9:59 mark, but Drake fought back to close the gap to three again at 16-13, with 7:36 remaining until intermission.

The Shockers earned their largest lead of the half at 22-13 on a Hatch trey with 5:44 remaining before DU's Young answered with a trey of his own.

Hatch reciprocated again with his second-straight three-pointer at the 4:30 mark which put WSU up 25-16 to force a DU timeout.

WSU took a 27-20 lead into the locker room at the half as DU outs-scored the Shockers 4-2 over the final four minutes of the half.

WSU will be back in action on Sun., Jan. 3, as the Shockers host Bradley. Tip-off is set for 2:05 p.m., and can be seen on Kansas 22 with Bruce Haertl and Craig Steven calling the action.
