SEA ISLAND, Ga. - Senior All-American
Dustin Garza rallied from a start plagued by bad weather to finish the Jones Cup Invitational tied for 20th with a 231 (79-78-74).
Held at the 7321-yard Ocean Forest Golf Club in Georgia, the Jones Cup Invitational is an invitation-only tournament decided upon each players' performance during the previous year. Garza, along with the rest of the field, received their invitations in October.
Day one met the 81-player field with high winds and rain, ending the first round in the 80s for nearly half of the competitors while the Mission, Texas native held on for a 79 (+7).
Although weather conditions were never ideal, Garza bounced back for a 78 (+6) in round two and cut four more strokes off of his score in the final round, 74 (+2).
Augusta State University's Patrick Reed won the championship on the first playoff hole after posting a 222 (72-76-74) for the tournament.
Garza and the Shockers open their season on Monday, Feb. 15 at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
