ST. LOUIS -- Tonya Nero continued to add to her accolades this past weekend as the senior from Trinidad and Tobago and Kyle Orne from Bradley University were selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Nero and Orne were honored for their performance during the period of August 30-September 5.
"Our partnership with Prairie Farms provides an important vehicle by which to honor our top student-athletes," said Commissioner Elgin. "Our student-athletes are the league's best representatives, and we're happy to recognize Tonya (Nero) and Kyle (Orne) for their athletic and academic achievements."
Entering its 12th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the MVC honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
To qualify for the award the student-athlete must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
Nero established a course record and took the individual crown at the 2010 John "J.K." Kornelson Gold Classic on September 4. Held in Augusta, Kan., the 62nd annual event featured both high school and collegiate races. Nero took home the top honors in the women's 4K race with a time of 13:30.81, nearly three seconds faster than her next competitor. Nero, who was also selected as the MVC Cross Country Athlete of the Week and WSU Athlete of the Week, has a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average in chemistry.
