Shockers
play in downtown Wichita for first time since 1955
WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State will play a men's basketball game in downtown Wichita
for the first time since 1955 when the series against Tulsa is renewed on Dec.
21 at INTRUST Bank Arena, Director of Athletics Eric Sexton announced today.
"Wichita State is excited
about the opportunity to be the first Division I basketball team to play in INTRUST Bank Arena," Sexton said. "This is a partnership
opportunity for WSU, Sedgwick County and the City of Wichita for the Shockers
to play basketball in a great venue. INTRUST Bank Arena must also host a
Division I basketball game this year as part of these same partners bringing
the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament event to Wichita in the spring, so the
Tulsa game made sense for a lot of reasons."
This WSU home game is included in the
Wichita State men's basketball season ticket package for 2010-11. Since the
venue is INTRUST Bank Arena, the tickets for this game will be mailed at a
later date than the remainder of the home game package.
The Wichita State
Athletic Department will utilize priority
points to assign seating locations for 2010-11 season ticket holders through
the SASO priority points system. The SASO priority points system rewards
Shocker fans objectively for their loyal support as both season ticket holders
and donors during this fiscal year and also historically.
"We were a little bit cautious prior to
formally announcing this game so we could ensure that our season ticket holders
and donors would be taken care of from a seating and parking perspective, and
we are now comfortable that the transition will be a good one for this game
downtown," Sexton said.
WSU season tickets are still on sale at the Shocker Ticket Office on the South
side of Charles Koch Arena on campus.
Fans can also purchase single game
tickets for the Tulsa game beginning on November 1 at the INTRUST Bank Arena
box office, by phone at 316-755-SEAT (7328), online at selectaseat.com
, and at all Select-A-Seat ticket outlets.
Division I basketball capacity for INTRUST Bank Arena is 15,004.
Through a collaborative effort with INTRUST Bank Arena, the City of Wichita and
Wichita State Athletics, reserved parking will be provided for all season
ticket holders for WSU men's basketball who normally receive reserved parking
as a result of their SASO membership. Information relative to the location of the
reserved lots will be mailed, along with the tickets, to the Dec. 21 game in
mid-November.
Tulsa and the Shockers
play on the hardwood for the 120th time overall, and the first game
since 2004-05 when the Shockers won, 71-66, in Tulsa, Okla. The series first
started in 1930-31 as a home-and-home event. The two teams last played in
Wichita during the 2003-04 season when the Shockers took a 66-58 win. Tulsa
leads the overall series by one game, 60-59.
