WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State junior Aliphine Tuliamuk
shattered the Wichita State school record and the Missouri Valley Conference
record with her time in the indoor women's 3,000 meters at the Boston
University Terrier Invitational Friday.
Tuliamuk finished second in the race with a time of 9:11.49
behind unattached professional runner Lauren Bonds, originally from Hutchinson,
Kan. Bonds finished in 9:08.51.
"That was definitely the best race I've seen Aliphine run,"
Wichita State assistant coach Kirk Hunter said. "She looked really confident.
The pace slowed down with four laps to go and Aliphine took the lead. Lauren
came back and got her at the end."
Tuliamuk, from Kapenguria, Kenya, broke Desiraye Osburn's 2006
school record time of 9:17.40 in the event and Illinois State runner Wendy
VanMierlo's 1984 conference record time of 9:17.05.
The automatic NCAA Championships qualifying time in the event is
9:10. Tuliamuk's time marked the second-fastest collegiate time in the nation
this season.
"I know I can still do better," said Tuliamuk, the defending
MVC champion in the event. "I wanted to run a 9:10, but I improved on my time
from last week by 14 seconds. That was great. I'm happy about it, but know I
can still do better.
"I'm just hoping that will get me into nationals. My goal is
to go in the 3K and 5K."
While Tuliamuk competed in Boston, about 30 Shockers
participated in the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kan., Friday. The meet did not
include team scoring, but several Shockers excelled individually.
Senior Audacia Moore finished third in the women's 200-meter
dash with a time of 24.65. When converted due to track size (24.15), her time
leads the MVC this season. Friday marked the first time the defending MVC
champion ran the event this winter.
Freshman Shanice Andrews finished second in the women's 60-meter hurdles Friday morning with a time of 8.93 — one of the top 10 times in the MVC this season.
Sophomore Samantha Shukla finished fifth in the mile during
the evening session with a time of 5:10.48.
During the meet's first session Friday, junior Elida Bailon
finished third in the women's mile with a time of 5:15.05.
Junior Marcos Bailon finished fifth in the men's mile with a
time of 4:25.64.
Clarrisa Johnson finished fourth in the women's 600-yard run
(1:31.25).
Natalie Morerod, competing for the first time this season,
finished third in the women's 400 meters (1:00.11).
The Shockers host their second and final indoor meet of the
season, the Varsity Apartments Invitational, Feb. 3-4 at the Heskett Center.
The meet opens at 11 a.m. Friday with the women's pentathlon 60-meter hurdles
and at 9:45 a.m. Saturday with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles.
