WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State women's tennis team will
head to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the No. 27 Cornhuskers on Friday, February 24
th
at 5 p.m. and Colorado State on Saturday, February 25
th at 11
a.m. Both matches will be played at the Nebraska Tennis Center. They will then
travel to Omaha, Neb. for a matchup against Creighton on Sunday, February 26
th
at 11 a.m. in their first conference game of the season.
No. 27 Nebraska (7-1) is coming off a successful weekend
where they defeated Washington State, 4-3, on Friday, February 17th
and Miami (Ohio), 5-2, on Sunday, February 19th. They have three
players ranked in the most recent national singles rankings. Mary Weatherholt
(6-2) is ranked No. 57, Janine Weinreich (3-2) is ranked No. 87, and Stefanie
Weinstein (118) is ranked No. 118. Their doubles combination of Madeleine
Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein is No. 22 in the nation with a perfect 8-0
record. The Cornhuskers have beaten two ranked opponents on the season. The Shockers have gone 14-16 all time
against the Cornhuskers and it will be their third straight match against a
ranked opponent.
The Colorado State Rams (2-4) are coming off a tough weekend
where Idaho defeated them, 5-2, on Friday, February 17th and New
Mexico State defeated them, 6-1, on Saturday, February 18th. The all
time series between the Rams and Shockers is tied up at 3-3.
Missouri Valley Conference opponent Creighton (4-2) won both
of their matchups last weekend. They defeated St. Cloud State, 7-0, on
Saturday, February 18th and North Dakota, 6-1, on Sunday, February
19th. It will be the first conference matchup for both teams on the
season. The Shockers hold the all time record against Creighton 23-2.
The Shocker women are looking to bounce back after playing
some tough opponents last time out. They traveled to West Lafayette, Ind. to
take on No. 41 Purdue on Friday, February 17th, where they were
defeated 5-2. The next day, the Shocks were defeated 4-3 by No. 66 Marshall.
Despite the tough times as a team, Sophomore Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul had a
strong weekend. She went 2-0 in singles competition by defeating Anna Dushkina
of Purdue, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8), and Karlyn Timko of Marshall, 6-2, 6-0.
