Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State picked up two wins against No.
24 Purdue Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium, handing the visiting Boilermakers
their second and third losses of the season.
The Shockers defeated Purdue, 8-2, in the first game and,
5-3, in the second game to split the four-game series, 2-2. Wichita State
improved to 12-10 overall with Saturday's victories, as the Boilermakers fell
to 14-3 on the season.
Wichita State compiled 14 hits in the first game, led by
four hits from Erik Harbutz. Casey Gillaspie and Johnny Coy each picked up two
RBI for the Shockers. Gillaspie and Taylor Doggett each added three hits apiece
in front of a crowd of 2,875.
Pitcher Josh Smith got the win on the mound for Wichita
State, throwing 6.1 innings and striking out six in the first game.
Coy's two-run homerun to left field in the bottom of the
first inning gave the Shockers a 2-0 lead. Gillaspie followed with a homerun to
right field for a 3-0 edge during Wichita State's next at-bat.
A Purdue homerun to right field by Angelo Cianfrocco in the
top of the third inning cut Wichita State's lead to 3-1. An RBI single from
Harbutz put Wichita State ahead, 4-1, in the third.
In the seventh inning, Harbutz singled and Coy scored on a
throwing error by the pitcher. Dayne Parker flied out to right field and Gillaspie
scored for a 6-1 lead later in the inning.
Lambert doubled to left center, scoring Kevin Hall in the
eighth inning. Gillaspie's single to center field scored Lambert for an 8-1
edge. An RBI double by Purdue's Barrett Serrato in the ninth
inning cut Wichita State's lead to six.
The Shockers picked up 10 more hits in
the back-and-forth second game of the doubleheader.
Pitcher A.J. Ladwig got the win for
Wichita State, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three
batters. Tyler Coughenour and Ryan Hege each got two hits. Hall and Coy picked
up two RBI each.
Purdue jumped out to a 2-0 lead with
one run scored in each of the first two innings.
Hege reached base on a fielding error
by Purdue's second baseman and Coughenour scored to cut the Boilermakers' lead
to, 2-1. A Coy double in the third scored Lambert to tie the game, 2-2.
Purdue took the lead once again in the fifth inning when
Eric Charles scored on a Kevin Plawecki double to right center.
Hall's two-RBI single scored Tyler Baker and Hege to regain
a 4-3 Shocker lead in the sixth inning.
Don Lambert tripled in the seventh inning and scored when
Coy reached on a throwing error by the Purdue second baseman to close out the
game's scoring in the seventh inning.
The Shockers next play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, kicking off a two-game
series against Alcorn State at Eck Stadium.
