AUSTIN, Texas- The Wichita State women's tennis team fell to
Texas, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at
the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The Shockers and Longhorns played three very competitive
doubles contests, but the Longhorns would win two out of three doubles matches
to take a 1-0 lead. Krista Damico and Cierra Gaytan-Leach defeated Lutfiana
Budiharto and Carla Venticinque, 8-6, and Elizabeth Begley and Aeriel Ellis
defeated Montse Blasco Fernandez and Veronika Blaskova, 8-4, to give the
Longhorns the advantage after doubles play.
The competitive play continued in the singles competition,
but the Longhorns were able to take three singles matches to move on to the
second round of the NCAA Tournament. Lina Padegimaite defeated Lucia Kovalova,
6-2, 6-1, and Krista Damico defeated Delia Damaschin, 6-1, 6-3. In the deciding
singles match, Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul dropped the
first set, 6-1, before falling in a tough second set, 7-6.
"I am proud of the way we competed and never gave up even
when we were down on most of the courts," said head coach Colin Foster. "Texas
showed why they are a top ten team and to beat a team like that on their home
courts is a tough task."
"I am really proud of the season we had, and I thank the
seniors for the careers they had. I am excited for the future of this program,"
added Foster.
Senior Lutfiana Budiharto will continue her season in
Athens, Ga., May 23-28 for the NCAA Singles Championships.
