WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State junior Tanya Friesen won the Missouri
Valley Conference women's heptathlon title Saturday and Tomas Cotter won the
men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the Shockers during the second day of
the State Farm MVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Cessna Stadium.
Friesen won her first MVC Outdoor title in the women's heptathlon with
5,472 points. Her two-day points total stands as Friesen's personal best in the
multi-event and ranks second all-time at WSU.
She recorded a personal best distance of 124-4 in the heptathlon
javelin and ran a personal best 2:19.70 in the heptathlon 800 meters. She won
the long jump portion of the heptathlon with a top distance of 19-3 ¼. Friesen went on to take third place in the
women's long jump with a distance of 19-2 ¾.
Cotter, a junior, won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:00.74 - more than 3 ½
seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
The Shockers enter the final day of conference competition leading both the men's and women's team races. The WSU women have 91.5 points through two days of competition, while the Shocker men lead with 73 points.
WSU's Mac Griffith and Justin Hickey finished second and third,
respectively, in the men's decathlon. Griffith posted 7,087 points and Hickey
7,031 points. Griffith's points total ranks among the all-time top-10 at
Wichita State.
Brandon Childs finished third in the men's high jump with a top mark of
6-9 ¾ to receive all-conference honors.
J'Lynn Ledesma jumped 5-10 in the women's high jump to take second
place. The mark was a personal best and ties for second all-time at WSU.
Austin Bahner finished second in the men's long jump with a mark of
23-11 ¾.
Several Shockers qualified for Sunday's finals via Saturday's
preliminary races. DJ Lindsay ran the fastest time in the preliminaries of the men's
400 meters (a season-best 48.49). Audacia Moore ran a season-best 11.59 in the
preliminaries of the women's 100 meters to record the top time of the day in
the event Saturday.
Sunday's action starts at noon with the women's triple jump and running
finals open at 1 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
Admission Saturday and Sunday costs $6 for adults and costs $3 for
youth ages 2-12 and seniors ages 65-plus.
