TF: McKown Sets Record; Shockers Qualify for NCAAs

AUSTIN, Texas -- Wichita State track & field student-athletes Todd McKown, Lawson Montgomery and Aliphine Tuliamuk advanced to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships with their performances Saturday in the NCAA West Preliminary Round at Mike A Myers Stadium.

Senior McKown set the Wichita State school record in the men's 110-meter hurdles with his time of 13.42 to qualify to run in the NCAA Championships June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa at Drake Stadium.

McKown broke Shannon Armstrong's record of 13.57, set May 30, 2003. McKown finished fourth overall in the event.

Montgomery's personal-best time of 13.63 in the men's 110-meter hurdles also advanced the senior to compete in Des Moines and gave him an eighth-place finish Saturday.

Tuliamuk finished fourth overall in the women's 5,000 meters to qualify for the NCAA Championships in a second event. She finished Saturday's 5K in 16:16.87 after already qualifying in the 10K Thursday night.

Saturday's qualifiers grew the Shockers' NCAA Championships squad to eight individuals in nine events. Tanya Friesen (heptathlon), Brett Trudo (javelin), Tomas Cotter (3,000-meter steeplechase), J'Lynn Ledesma (high jump) and Natalie Morerod (400-meter hurdles) will also compete in Des Moines after qualifying earlier in the weekend.

Morerod competed again Saturday in the semifinals of the women's 100-meter hurdles. She finished 21st with a time of 13.57, but was unable to advance to the June finals in that event.

Courtney Reinke finished 21st in the women's triple jump with a top mark of 40-5.

Brandon Childs finished 33rd in the men's high jump with a top mark of 6-8 Saturday.

The Wichita State men's 4x400-meter team of Alex Reed, DJ Lindsay, Kyle Long and Dylan Hartnett finished 22nd overall in 3:12.78.

The top 12 competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from this weekend's East and West Preliminary Rounds to the NCAA Championships.
