WICHITA - The Wichita State University men's golf team
opened the 2012-13 season with a victory in its home tournament, taking the
Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic by 16 strokes.
Senior Rafael Becker tied for medalist honors to lead WSU at the Wichita
Country Club.
Becker knotted with William Woods' Julian Taylor at 8-under
par. The Shocker senior turned in a
36-hole total 205 (68-67-70) and moved up from fifth place entering Tuesday's
final round. Taylor stroked a third round total 66 to pace the field.
Two other Shockers landed in the top 10 as Calvin Pearson
and Louis Cohen Boyer tied for fifth at 3-under. Pearson (66-70-74=210) and Boyer (72-68-70)
narrowly edged teammates Tyler Gann (11th, 212) and Hunter Sparks
(18th, 214).
Kansas State took second in the tournament, landing four
players in the top 20. Indian Hills
Community College placed third, helped in part by Connor Peck's sparkling 64 in
the first round on Monday.
Wichita State returns to action Monday at the Colorado State
Ram Master Collegiate in Fort Collins, Colo.
