MGolf: WSU Wins Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic

WICHITA - The Wichita State University men's golf team opened the 2012-13 season with a victory in its home tournament, taking the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic by 16 strokes.  Senior Rafael Becker tied for medalist honors to lead WSU at the Wichita Country Club.

Becker knotted with William Woods' Julian Taylor at 8-under par.  The Shocker senior turned in a 36-hole total 205 (68-67-70) and moved up from fifth place entering Tuesday's final round. Taylor stroked a third round total 66 to pace the field.

Two other Shockers landed in the top 10 as Calvin Pearson and Louis Cohen Boyer tied for fifth at 3-under.  Pearson (66-70-74=210) and Boyer (72-68-70) narrowly edged teammates Tyler Gann (11th, 212) and Hunter Sparks (18th, 214).

Kansas State took second in the tournament, landing four players in the top 20.  Indian Hills Community College placed third, helped in part by Connor Peck's sparkling 64 in the first round on Monday.

Wichita State returns to action Monday at the Colorado State Ram Master Collegiate in Fort Collins, Colo.
