MOINES, Iowa- The Wichita State women's tennis team had a successful
second day at the Drake Fall Invitational on Saturday as freshman
Rebecca Pedrazzi and junior Montse
Blasco Fernandez made it to the finals of the top two singles flights
in the tournament.
In
flight 'A' singles competition, Pedrazzi defeated Hafsa Laraibi of
South Dakota, 6-1, 6-2, then Klavdija Rebol of Drake, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, to
reach the finals. She will take
on Nelle Youel from Northern Illinois on Sunday.
Fellow freshman Masa Smic had a tough day in singles competition, losing her two matches in flight 'A' play.
In
flight 'B' play, Blasco Fernandez defeated Haley Dekkinga from Northern
Illinois in a tough match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. She then reached the finals
by defeating Evy Van Genechten
from Drake, 6-2, 6-0. She will play Nell Boyd, also from Drake, on
Sunday in the flight 'B' finals.
Freshman
Summer Schlotterback won her first singles match as a Shocker in flight
'C' play. She was able to defeat Sarah Stejskal of North Dakota, 6-4,
6-2. Schlotterback fell
in the semifinals however, 7-5, 6-2, against Mary Malkin of Northern
Illinois. She will play against Sam Anderson from Creighton in the
consolation bracket on Sunday.
The finals and consolation matches start early on Sunday.
