WTEN: Shockers Complete First Day at Kansas Invite

LAWRENCE, Kan.- The Wichita State women's tennis team completed their first day at the Kansas Invitational on Friday night at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.

In the singles 'A' draw, junior Veronika Blaskova defeated Viktoriya Plyuta of Arkansas-Little Rock in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to get her first singles victory of the season. Fellow juniors Carla Venticinque and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul also got their first wins of the season, defeating Ioana Teu of Arkansas State, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Laura Mongin of Abilene-Christian, 7-6, 6-3, respectively. Montse Blasco Fernandez captured her third singles victory of the season, moving on in the 'G' draw by defeating Veronica Makashov of South Dakota, 6-3, 6-4.

In the first round of the round robin bracket, freshman Summer Schlotterback defeated Camille Kraijic of South Dakota in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

Lucia Kovalova, Rebecca Pedrazzi and Masa Smic all fell in their draws, but will continue play in the consolation brackets.

In the doubles 'A' draw, No. 32 Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova won their first two doubles contests on the season. First they defeated Tamara Slijepcevic and Jess Heeps-Eriksen of Arkansas State, 8-1, then Giada D'ortona and Brook Dennis of Texas-Arlington, 8-5, to move onto the semifinals. Also in the 'A' draw, Carla Venticinque and Rebecca Pedrazzi fell in the second round to Carli Wischhoff and Ivana Kubickova of Kansas State, 8-4, after defeating Viktoriya Plyuta and Yana Kakovkina of Arkansas-Little Rock, 8-3, in the first round. The duo will continue doubles play in the fifth-place bracket.

In the doubles 'B' draw, both Shocker duos made it into the semifinal round. Freshmen Summer Schlotterback and Masa Smic defeated Amy Barnthouse and Victoria Khanevskaya of Kansas, 8-5, after defeating Veronika Makashov and Maria Tortosa Bernabeu of South Dakota, 8-3, in the first round. The junior duo of Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul and Montse Blasco Fernandez moved on by first taking down Emily Conrad and Madelyn Walker of Abilene-Christian, 8-4, then Elizabeth Thoms and Katarina Dikosavljevic of Texas-Arlington, 8-3.

The Kansas Invitational will continue play on Saturday morning.
