WICHITA, Kan.- Five Shocker individuals and three doubles
teams will play in the semifinals of their respective flights on Saturday after
completing the first day of play at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual
Championships on Friday night at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
In flight one doubles, No. 32 Veronika Blaskova and Lucia
Kovalova defeated their first round opponent, Klavdija Rebol and Jordan
Eggleston of Drake, 8-1. They kept their record undefeated, moving to 5-0 so
far this season. In the semifinals they will play Natasha James and Kelsey
Costales of Evansville.
Junior Carla Venticinque and her freshman partner Rebecca
Pedrazzi also played well, as they competed in the flight two doubles draw.
They defeated Chelsea Moore and Lindsay Cayton of Northern Iowa, 8-0, and will
play Sam Anderson and Amanda Noonan of Creighton in the semifinals.
In the flight three doubles draw, Montse Blasco Fernandez
and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul had a bye in the first round and will play Analese
Snyder and Karlin Naslund of Creighton on Saturday.
In singles play, Lucia Kovalova, Carla Venticinque, Rebecca
Pedrazzi and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul defeated their opponents in straight sets.
Joining them in the next round will be Montse Blasco Fernandez, who had a bye
in the first round of the flight six draw. Junior Veronika Blaskova fell in
flight one singles play to Melanie Delsart of Southern Illinois, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3,
but came back strong in the consolation bracket to beat Mina Milovic of
Evansville, 6-4, 6-1. She will play for fifth place.
Freshman Summer Schlotterback also competed for the Shockers
in flight seven singles, but was defeated by Jordan Eggleston of Drake, 6-2,
6-1. She will continue play in the consolation bracket.
