WICHITA, Kan. -
The Wichita State softball team split a pair of exhibition games Saturday at
Wilkins Stadium. The Shockers defeated Cowley County, 10-4, before falling to
Western Oklahoma State, 7-2.
In Saturday's opening game against Cowley County, Wichita
State escaped the top of the first inning, surrendering only one run despite
committing three fielding errors.
In the bottom of the inning the Shockers responded
immediately when senior Danika Miller belted a lead off solo home run over the
center field fence to even the score, 1-1. Consecutive two-out RBI's from Erin
Carney and Brittany Fortner extended the Shocker lead to 3-1. Melanie Jaegers
added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-2.
A four run third inning for the Shockers blew open the game
as junior Ali Vandever roped a two-run double to left center. Following
Vandever's double, Miller stepped to the plate and added her second home run of
the game to right field.
After Cowley added a run in the top of the sixth, senior
Hayley Temple answered back with a double off the top of the wall in left
center that plated Kacie Eich and Molly Baker to close out scoring for both
teams.
Senior Katie Armagost got the win in the circle for the
Shockers throwing four innings and allowing one earned run.
In Saturday's nightcap, Western Oklahoma St. opened the
scoring in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to left field. Brianne Bond's
RBI single in the bottom of the inning knotted the score, 1-1.
Jaegers gave Wichita State their only lead of the game the
following inning when her single to right field went under the glove of the
right fielder to score Miller all the way from first base.
A three run fifth inning gave Western Oklahoma a, 4-2, lead.
The Shockers threatened in the bottom of the inning but the threat was negated
when Miller was thrown out attempting to advance to third base.
The Pioneers added three insurance runs on Emery Fox's
three-run home run to right center to extend the lead to the final tally, 7-2.
Wichita State is next in action Wed., Oct. 10 against Butler
County. The doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium.
