WTen: Shocks Continue Play at Region Championships

TULSA, Okla.- No. 32 Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova moved into the round of 16 in the doubles competition at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships on Friday. Kovalova also moved into the round of 16 in the singles competition.

Blaskova and Kovalova, the three-seed in the competition, defeated Paulson and McLean of Arkansas, 8-5. The duo will take on Lancaster and Engbroks of Oklahoma on Saturday.

Rebecca Pedrazzi and Carla Venticinque, as well as Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul and Montse Blasco Fernandez fell in their first round match-ups.

In singles competition, Lucia Kovalova defeated her first round opponent, Aabbi Melrose of Oklahoma, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. She also took her second round match in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(5), against Michelle Farley of Tulsa.

Freshman Rebecca Pedrazzi defeated Ivana Kubickova of Kansas State, 6-3, 6-2, in her first round contest, but was unable to get by her second round opponent, Jannie Weinreich of Nebraska. Weinreich took down Pedrazzi, 6-3, 6-2. Carla Venticinque, Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul and Veronika Blaskova all lost their first round contests and continued play in the consolation bracket.
