AUSTIN, Texas- The No. 61 Wichita State women's tennis team fell to No. 11 Texas, 5-0, on Saturday in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off weekend at Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

The Shockers came ready to play, battling the tough Longhorn team right from the first serve in doubles play. Carla Venticinque and Rebecca Pedrazzi defeated Elizabeth Begley and Aeriel Ellis, 8-4. Texas came right back however, as Breaunna Addison and Noel Scott of Texas defeated Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova, 8-6.

In the deciding third match of doubles play, Lina Padegimaite and Annat Rabinovich of Texas were able to come out on top, defeating Montse Fernandez and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul in a close match, 8-7 (2), and give the Longhorns the doubles point.

"Our doubles play continues to be encouraging," said head coach Colin Foster. "It's good to see the team implementing the things we've been working on and having success doing so."

Battling injuries, the Shocker women were not able to play at the six singles position, and fell at the two, three and five positions.

"In singles we're a bit banged up right now. I think the competitiveness of the doubles point got their attention, and Texas brought their best into the singles play," Foster added. "Tomorrow, we've got a great opportunity against a ranked team and we will be ready to go."

The Shockers will take on No. 69 Stephen F. Austin at 10 a.m. on Sunday in their second match of the tournament. Live stats will be available and results will be posted on GoShockers.com following the completion of play.
