MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -
Wichita State had their five-game winning streak snapped on the final day of
the Coastal Carolina Invitational falling 7-6 to Albany.
The Shockers (9-9) staked claim to a 1-0 lead in
the top of the first on Brianne Bond's RBI single to right field that scored
Melanie Jaegers from third.
Albany (4-5) answered in the bottom of the inning
with three runs, two unearned, to take a 3-1 lead after one inning of play.
Bond kept her hot streak going leading off the
top of the third with her first home run of the season to left field narrowing
the Shocker deficit to 3-2. After Hayley Temple doubled down the right
field line, sophomore Laura Vickers brought her home with a single to center to
tie the game, 3-3.
Following a scoreless fourth inning from both
teams Vickers gave Wichita State a 4-3 lead on a one-out double to left center
scoring Ali Vandever from second. Layne Greenlee then launched her third home
run of the weekend over the center field fence putting WSU up 6-3 after five
innings.
Down to their final six outs Albany fought back
to take the lead in the sixth. Lauren Alcorn hit a one-out two-run single
through the left side of the infield to make the score 6-5 in favor of Wichita
State. Shocker starting pitcher Sloan Anderson then struck out pinch hitter
Jess Tate before Lindsey Stout followed with a two-run home run that hugged the
left field foul pole to give Albany a 7-6 lead.
The Shockers went down in order in the top of the
seventh to end the game.
Wichita State will next be in action as they open
their home schedule against No. 1 Oklahoma on Wed., Mar. 6. The doubleheader
