Baton Rouge, La. – Wichita State's season came to a close as the Shockers placed 11th at the NCAA Men's Golf Baton Rouge Regional. WSU was seeded 11th but needed to place in the top five to advance to the NCAA Championship.
Junior Chandler Rusk was Wichita State's top performer for the second-straight day. The Edmond, Okla. native carded a 2-over 74, delivering five birdies on the final 18 holes. That brought his three-day, 54-hole total to +17 (83-76-74=233) as he rebounded nicely from a tough opening round.
Senior Hunter Sparks was WSU's top individual overall, tying for 30th. He shot 6-over on Saturday to finish at +11 (72-77-78=227) for the regional. Fellow senior Rafael Becker was 4-over on Saturday to end at +14 overall (75-79-76=230) to tie for 40th.
The nation's No.2-ranked team, Alabama, came charging back to claim the regional crown. The Crimson Tide trailed Florida by eight strokes entering the day but shot --- to fly by their conference mates.
Alabama took the top two individual spots, including medalist Scott Strohmeyer, who shot a 2-under on Saturday to finish at 4-under (70-73-69=212).
Florida, LSU, Tennessee, and Coastal Carolina also advanced to the NCAA Championship. South Alabama's Tyler Klava qualified as an individual after winning a one-hole playoff.
Despite a disappointing finish, the WSU men's golf team notched a sixth-straight MVC championship and participated in the NCAA tournament for the 20th time.
