EUGENE, Ore. - Wichita State incoming track and field student-athlete Kord Ferguson, the nation's top high school track and field thrower, threw 201'-0” in the discus throw to win the discus throw event during day one of the USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championships on Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Freshman track and field student-athlete Isaac Poe also competed at the USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries.
With the win, Ferguson qualified for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships that take place in Eugene from July 22-27. He also became just the fifth American high school student-athlete to ever throw 200' with the implemented discus used at the USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championships, which was heavier than the high school discus and lighter than the college discus.
Shocker track and field assistant coach John Hetzendorf was proud of the way Ferguson performed.
"I'm excited for Ferguson," Hetzendorf said. "The win not only made him the best discus thrower in the nation under 20 years of age, but the win also put him on the USA World Junior Championship Team. It's always a special thing to represent your country."
Poe finished 18th in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 55.52.
Ferguson will compete for the second time during the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in the shot put final on Sunday at 6 p.m. C.T./4 p.m. P.T. Results will be posted following the completion of the shot put.
