TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Wichita State women finished second overall, while the men were fourth as a team at the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships, which featured five individual WSU champions, as well as a championship relay team on the third day.
The Shocker women finished just 10 points behind Southern Illinois for the team championship with 171.5 points. Indiana State was third at 128 and Missouri State was fourth at 116. For the men, Northern Iowa took the team championships with 207 points. SIU was second (179), Indiana State was third (173) and the Shockers were fourth with 125 points.
Senior
Kellyn Johnson led the women's team on the third day, claiming the individual title in both the 1500m and 5000m. She added to her victory in the 3000m steeplechase the day before with a time of 4:27.38 in the 1500m and a time of 16:32.56 in the 5000m.
Also on the track for the women, freshman
Audacia Moore capped a great rookie conference meet with an individual championship in the 200m, a 4x100m relay championship and an all-MVC run in the 100m. Moore broke her previous personal best in the 200m with a time of 23.53, while running a second-place time of 11.72 in the 100m. Moore's time in the 200m broke a 24-year-old school record of 23.74 set by Nina Thompson in 1985. She joined forces with
Jasmine Cato,
Samantha Hallman, and
Brittany Hemphill to win the 4x100m relay with a time of 45.56, another school record. The previous 4x100m relay record of 45.90 was also set in 1985. Hemphill also earned all-MVC honors in the 200m with a third-place finish at 24.31. The freshman was also sixth in the 100m (12.20).
In the 100m hurdles,
Samantha Hallman placed fifth with a time of 14.38, while teammate Salena Burns was sixth at 14.41. The intermediate hurdlers also helped the Shocker cause, led by a fifth-place finish from freshman
Emily Ballock (1:02.95) and a seventh-place finish at 1:03.08. Sophomore
Lauren Eck chipped in with a fifth-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:15.51.
For the women in the field events,
Erika Kovesi earned all-MVC honors in the women's triple jump with her best leap of the season. Her jump of 41-1.5 was less than a foot short of the leader. In the discus throw Kate Schaake turned in a fifth-place finish at 149-10.
On the men's side, sophomore
Chris Allen claimed the sprint-hurdle championship with a time of 14.38 in the 110m hurdles. Freshman
Todd McKown also placed in the 110m hurdles, earning all-MVC honors for third place at 14.61.
Senior
Jared Foley capped his MVC career with a fifth-place finish in the 400m (48.65) and a sixth-place finish in the 200m (21.48). Also on the track for the men, Foley helped the 4x100m relay team of
Denny Nedd, Matt Sittenauer, and Keith Blanding to a third-place finish, as well the 4x400m relay team of
Chris Dickman,
Justin Smith, and Blanding to a fourth-place finish (3:12.15).
Justin Smith also placed sixth in the 400m with a time of 49.43.
In the field events for the men, sophomore Josh Crawford led a 1-2 Shocker finish with teammate Ian Lindstrom in the triple jump. Crawford had a career-best leap of 50-8.25, while Lindstrom was just behind him with a distance of 50-2.5. Also in the field, senior Beau Morris earned all-MVC honors with a third place finish in the pole vault (16-10.75).
The Shockers will compete in the NCAA Midwest Regionals next in Norman, Okla., on May 29-30.
