NORMAN, Okla. -- Four Shockers punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on the first day of competition at the NCAA Midwest Regional at John Jacobs Track and Field Complex on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
Kellyn Johnson and Brooke Demo, fellow seniors, each grabbed a berth to the NCAA Outdoor Championships with their performances in the 5000m and pole vault, respectively. Johnson outraced Iowa State's Betsy Saina to win the regional crown with a 5000-meter time of 16:33.55, while Demo cleared 13-5.75 in the pole vault to place fifth overall.
Brett Trudo and
Trent Mazanec led the Shocker men on the first day of competition, each earning a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the javelin. Trudo placed second in a tight javelin competition with a throw of 223 feet, seven inches, less than two feet behind the winner. Mazanec was three spots back in fifth place with his toss of 216-4. Also competing in the javelin was
Adam Capps, whose throw of 199-5 placed him 15th overall.
For the Shocker women, Tish Brown was second in her flight of the long jump, earning a spot in finals, and finished ninth overall with a leap of 19-9.5.
In the women's 4x100m relay, the Shockers missed out on making tomorrow's final, coming in with a ninth-place finish in the prelims and a time of 46.47. The women's relay team consisted of
Jasmine Cato,
Audacia Moore,
Samantha Hallman, and Tish Brown.
The lone runner on the track for the Shocker men at the regional meet was hurdler
Chris Allen. Allen placed seventh in his heat with a time of 14.57, and 18th overall.
Also for the women, senior Kate Schaake finished her Shocker career placing 22nd overall in the discus with a toss of 143-11. And Moore, who competed in the women's 4x100m relay placed 16th in the prelims of the 200m with a time of 24.09.
