FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Former Wichita State golfer Ryan Spears posted a 3-over 73 in his second round at the 2009 U.S. Open, and at +6 overall, failed to make the cut for the remainder of the weekend.
Spears (73-73=146) matched his opening round score, and missed the cut by just two strokes at 4-over. His round Saturday was an up-and-down affair that included four birdies, five bogeys and a double at the par-4 16th.
He finishes The Open tied for 72nd in his first appearance.
FRIDAY COVERAGE (First Round Completion)
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Former Shocker golfer Ryan Spears fired a 3-over-par 73 to complete his first round at the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black after the opening round was suspended yesterday due to heavy rains in the area.
Spears finished his first round that was suspended early yesterday by going +4 over the final 15 holes after opening with a 1-under start through three yesterday. He bogeyed the fifth, 11th and 12th holes before posting a birdie on the par-5 13th to move back to +1 on the round. He then recorded par on four-straight holes before finishing with a double-bogey six on the par-4 18th.
The Del City, Okla., native hit 10-fo-14 fairways in his opening round, and was 2-of-3 on sand save opportunities. He will start his second round at a time to-be-determined on Saturday.
THURSDAY COVERAGE (First Round Suspended)
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Former Shocker golfer Ryan Spears sits atop the leaderboard with three others as his 1-under score through three holes is good for a share of the lead at the rain-logged U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, which was suspended early Thursday afternoon.
Spears birdied the par-4 389-yard second hole with a lengthy putt from that came as one of the early shots of the day on the highlight reels before play was postponed for the day.
The Del City, Okla., native posted par on the first and third holes before heavy rains forced the players off the course before the first round was suspended a few hours later. He currently stands tied at 1-under with Jeff Brehaut, Sweeden's Johan Edfors and Canadian Andrew Parr.
Play is scheduled to resume at 6:30 a.m., CT Friday, with the players scheduled for Thursday's afternoon wave taking the course no earlier than 9 a.m. Check the leaderboard link above for information on when round two would begin.
