WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State volleyball team won their home opener, defeating Colorado State, 3-1, on Thursday night at Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers won by scores of 25-12, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-19.
Junior Elizabeth Field led the way with 10 kills and freshman Ashlyn Driskill added nine kills of her own.
Junior Chelsey Feekin had 34 assists and 12 digs for the Shockers in the match.
The Shockers got off to a fast start in the first set. Sam Sanders had back-to-back kills and WSU took a 4-0 lead. A block by Ashley Andrade put WSU in front 11-6. Emily Adney served two-straight aces for a 23-11 lead and WSU won 25-12 on a block by Chelsey Feekin, Katie Reilly and Sanders.
CSU took the big lead early in the second set. Izzy Gaulia served the Rams to a 6-0 lead. WSU finally cut into the lead late in the set as a block by Reilly and Feekin cut the lead to 22-17. A kill by Ashlyn Driskill made the score 23-19, but CSU closed out the set 25-20 on a WSU service error.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the third set. A kill by Driskill put the Shocks up 11-9, but the Rams scored three-straight to go up 12-11. A 5-0 run behind the serving of Feekin gave WSU a 19-17 lead and the Shocks closed it out 25-20 on a block by Sanders and Andrade.
Set number four was another close one between the two teams. The Shockers pulled away for good when they scored their fourth straight point on a block by Driskill and Feekin. The Shockers clinched the match with a kill by Ashley Andrade to take the fourth set 25-19.
The Shockers are in action again on Fri., Aug. 31 against BYU at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
