VB: Shockers Drop Five-Setter to No. 14 Tennessee

WICHITA, Kan. -  No. 14 Tennessee earned a thrilling five-set win over Wichita State.  The Lady Volunteers won by scores of 25-19, 28-26, 22-25, 24-26 and 15-9.

Emily Adney led the Shockers with 16 kills and 14 digs, while Ashley Andrade had 13 kills and nine blocks.  Chelsey Feekin had nine kills, 48 assists and 16 digs, while Jackie Church had 22 digs.

UT took a quick 6-2 lead in the first set, but the Shockers cut it to 12-11 on a block by Elizabeth Field and Ashley Andrade.  The Lady Vols used a 4-0 run to increase the lead to 17-12 and UT won the set 25-19.

The Shocks took a 3-0 lead in the second set behind the serving of Gaby Urban.  UT came back to tie it at four.  The Lady Vols took an 8-6 lead on a Shocker service error, but WSU battled back to within 17-16 on a kill by Sam Sanders.  Back-to-back kills by Chelsey Feekin gave the Shocks an 18-17 lead.  The set went back-and-forth the rest of the way as WSU reached set point at 24-23 on a kill by Emily Adney.  UT tied it at 24 on a kill and won the set 28-26 with a kill and service ace.

A kill by Field gave WSU an early 5-4 lead in the third set.  UT came back to take a 10-7 lead before a kill by MaryAshton Floyd ended the run.  WSU used a 5-1 run to take a 17-13 lead and WSU held on to win the set 25-22 on a kill by Andrade.

The Lady Vols grabbed a 15-10 lead in the fourth set before the Shockers started chipping away.  Andrade had two kills and Adney had one to cut the lead to 16-14.  Kills by Urban and Field tied the score at 16 and a UT hitting error gave WSU an 18-17 lead.  The Lady Vols answered and took a 21-19 lead, but a UT hitting error tied the set at 22.   UT reached match point at 24-22, but two-straight Shocker blocks tied the score at 24.  A service ace by Urban gave the Shocks a 25-24 lead and WSU won 26-24 on a UT hitting error.

A UT kill gave the Lady Vols a 5-2 lead in the fifth set, but a kill by Adney cut the lead to 7-5.  A service ace and kill put UT up 10-5, but back-to-back errors by the Lady Vols gave WSU a chance at 10-7.  UT used back-to-back kills to take a 13-9 lead and closed out the set with a 15- 9 win.

The Shockers are next in action on Thurs., Sept. 6 at SMU at 7 p.m.
