WICHITA - The Wichita State University men's golf team opens the 2012 fall season at the Wichita Country Club for the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic, beginning Monday, Sept. 10.

The Shockers return all five starters from a squad that captured WSU's fifth-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference title and showed up in the national rankings repeatedly during the spring semester.  Last year's MVC Golfer-of-the-year, Rafael Becker, joins with MVC Champion Hunter Sparks, senior Tyler Gann, junior Calvin Pearson, and sophomore Louis Cohen Boyer to form a strong returning nucleus.  Transfer Chandler Rusk and redshirt freshman Alec Heinen are expected to contribute, as well.

Joining WSU are Kansas State University, Newman University, Indian Hills Community College, Oklahoma Christian University, Oklahoma City University, Texas Wesleyan University, and William Woods University.

Wichita State won the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic last year, with Sparks and Pearson tying for medalist honors.  The Shockers posted a 12-stroke victory in the team race.

The tournament begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday morning.  The teams will play 36 holes on Monday followed by 18 on Tuesday.
