MIDLAND, Texas- Senior Matheus Pereira and sophomore Alvaro Gutierrez captured the doubles title on Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.
The pair took down the No. 50 team in the nation, Tristan Jackson and Grant Ive of Tulsa, 8-2, to move into the final round. They then defeated Hans Hach and Borja Cortes of ACU, whom teammates Tomislav Gregurovic and Guillermo Nicol had lost to in the other semifinal, 8-6, to capture the doubles title.
“It was a very good tournament for Matt and Al,” said head coach Brad Louderback. “They have only been playing together for a couple weeks, and it is good for them to come out and beat a nationally ranked doubles team and win their first tournament together.”
In the consolation singles bracket, sophomore Tomislav Gregurovic defeated Borja Cortes of ACU in the semifinals, 8-4, before falling to Mitch McDaniels of New Mexico, 8-6, in the finals.
“It was a good start to the season,” added Louderback. “It was good to come down here and perform well.”
The Shocker men continue their fall season on Saturday, Sept. 29th when they will start qualifying for the ITA Championships.
