LAWRENCE, Kan.- The Wichita State women's tennis team completed play in the Kansas Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
After reaching the finals in three singles draws on Saturday, the Shocker women were unable to capture their brackets in Sunday's final contests. Junior Veronika Blaskova fell in the 'A' draw to No. 14 Petra Neidermayerova of Kansas State, 6-0, 6-0. In the 'C' draw finals, Carla Venticinque fell in a tough three set match to Maria Jose Cardona of Kansas, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4. Finally, in the 'G' draw finals, Montse Blasco Fernandez was defeated by Kaysie Hermsdorf of Abilene-Christian, 6-4, 6-1.
In the consolation brackets, freshmen Rebecca Pedrazzi and Masa Smic were able to win their contests.
"Overall it was a very solid tournament," said head coach Colin Foster. "We certainly dropped a few matches that could have gone our way, but we competed very well and fought hard in every single match."
Foster and the Shockers now look forward to the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships that will come to Wichita in two weeks.
"These first two weeks of competition were a very good starting point for our season, and we are excited to host the MVC Individuals in two weeks," added Foster.
The MVC Individuals will be held at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex, October 5-7.
