XC: Teams Prepare for MVC Championships Saturday

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State men's and women's cross country teams travel to compete Saturday, Oct. 27 in the MVC Cross Country Championship at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill., hosted by Illinois State.The women's 5K race will start at 10:30 a.m. (CDT), followed by the men's 8K race at 11:30 a.m. (CDT)

Wichita State's women's cross country team was picked second, and the Shocker men are picked third, in the MVC coaches' pre-championship poll.

The Shocker women enter Sunday's meet having won six out of the last seven conference championships, and seek their 13th title in school history. They are ranked eighth in the Midwest Region in the latest NCAA Division I regional rankings released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Oct. 17.

The Shocker women are led by senior Aliphine Tuliamuk, who holds the fastest 4K, 5K, and 6K times in the Valley this season and sophomore Kaitlyn McLeod, who has posted strong performances this season as well with her best finish being at the Missouri State Invite placing third overall.

The Shocker men are ranked 13th in the Midwest - staying at that ranking throughout the entire season. Wichita State, which has won eight conference team titles, last finished among the top three at the conference meet in 2003.

Sophomore Sterling Spencer has been the men's most consistent runner and holds the eighth-fastest 8K time in the conference this season (24:37.80). Seniors Marcos Bailon and Jake Wike have also posted strong perfomances this season. Bailon has two second place finishes this season, at the JK Gold Classic and the Missouri State Invite, and Wike has posted a third place finish at the JK Gold Classic and a sixth place finish at the Missouri State Invite. Wike holds the 12th best 8K time in the Valley while Bailon holds the 15th best time.

In 2011, the Wichita State women finished in second place, snapping their streak of six straight MVC titles, and the men finished fourth. Indiana State took home first place in both the women's and men's races last season.

Results of the MVC Championships will be posted Saturday afternoon.
