WICHITA - Wichita State University senior Chynna Turner was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for Jan. 28. She is the second Shocker in as many weeks to earn the award.
Turner led Wichita State to road wins at Southern Illinois and Evansville to keep WSU atop the conference standings with a 7-0 record, matching the school's best ever start to MVC competition. The senior poured in a season-high 22 points in Friday's 72-59 victory at SIU then led the team in scoring (11 points) and rebounds (seven) in Sunday's 49-45 grinder at then-second-place Evansville.
In addition to her prolific weekend, Turner reached a career milestone, collecting her 500th rebound in the game at Evansville.
In conference play Turner is averaging 9.3 points and 5.1 rebounds while shooting .537 from the field. She also has 15 assists and nine steals in seven Valley games.
This is the second career player-of-the-week award for Turner. She previously won last season after recording back-to-back double-doubles to open conference play. During her freshman year, Turner earned the MVC Newcomer of the Week award for Dec. 30, 2009.
WSU sophomore Alex Harden was honored as last week's MVC Player of the Week. This is only the second time since the weekly award's inception in 1992-93 that WSU has claimed the Player of the Week back-to-back times. The other occasion was Jan. 13 and 20, 2003 when Angela Buckner and Tisharria Huggins claimed the honors.
