WICHITA, Kan.- The No. 65 Wichita State women's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 20 Purdue on Monday at Wichita Country Club.
The Shocker women went down a point early when they fell in the doubles competition. Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt defeated Lucia Kovalova and Veronika Blaskova, 8-4, and Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal defeated Carla Venticinque and Rebecca Pedrazzi, 8-2, to put the Boilermakers up 1-0.
Freshman Julia Schiller grabbed the only point of the day for Wichita State when she defeated Daniela Vidal at the No. 3 singles position, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
"I thought the fight, energy and intensity was much better today, and that is something we talked about after the Kansas State match on Saturday," head coach Colin Foster said. "We have to continue to build on that going forward."
Wichita State will welcome Creighton to Wichita Country Club on Sunday, March 3 for their first conference match of the season at 8 a.m.
"Obviously this weekend was tough competition with Kansas State and Purdue both being highly ranked coming in," Foster said. "The Creighton match will be a chance for us to put things we learned this weekend into action."
