WGolf: Shocks Ready for Pinehurst Challenge

WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State women’s golf team will head to Pinehurst, N.C. to compete in the Pinehurst Challenge at Pinehurst No. 6 hosted by College of Charleston April 1-2.

The Shocker women are coming off a 14th place finish at the UALR Women’s Golf Classic. Senior Sarah Gilbert, playing in her first tournament of the spring, shot a 246 (84-80-82) to finish in a tie for 42nd. Freshman Bryce Schroeder finished three shots behind her with a 249 (79-87-83). Meghan Schuetz (254), Hannah Martin (256) and Madison Murphy (261) rounded out the scores for the Shockers.

Two weeks ago at the Mountain View Collegiate Invitational, Wichita State shot the best team score in Shocker history, 909 (304-292-313), since the 1995-96 squad shot a 907 at the Northwest Invitational.

The Pinehurst #6 course will be set up as a par 72 and will measure 5,993 yards combined over the 18 holes of the golf course. The teams will play a practice round on Sunday and will start the tournament with a 36-hole shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. on Monday. The tournament will conclude with a final round 18-hole shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

The 19-team tournament field includes Boston University, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Dartmouth, Illinois State, Jacksonville, James Madison, Morehead State, North Florida, Old Dominion, Penn State, Richmond, Rollins, Samford, St. John’s, Tennessee Tech, Wichita State and William & Mary.

It will be the last tournament for the spring for the Shockers before they head to the Missouri Valley Conference Championships April 21-23 in Sunrise Beach, Mo. Results will be posted on following each day.
