Junior Adin Stromgren finished the 2009 Pinehurst Challenge, tied for ninth place to conclude her first fall season as a Shocker.

PINEHURST, N.C. - The Shockers knocked seven strokes off of round one's score to finish the Pinehurst Challenge with a team score of 607 (307-300), ending their fall season with the best low 36-hole score in Shocker history.

After shooting a 307 in the first day of competition, the Shockers rebounded with a 300 on Tuesday. They fell just short of clipping third-place Morehead State despite shooting five strokes better than MSU in the final round. Wichita State finished the tournament just two strokes behind the Eagles.

"We did better," Head Coach Tom McCurdy said. "We got rid of the silly errors and looked much better."

The Shockers also defeated the only other Missouri Valley Conference team in the field, Creighton, by 39 strokes.

For the second consecutive tournament, junior Adin Stromgren led the Shocker charge. She fired a 76 on Friday to finish with a 148 (72-76) and tied for ninth place.

"She didn't throw away any shots today," McCurdy said. "it was a really good tournament for her."

Freshman Gretchen Huhnerkoch stayed consistent, notching her second 75 (+3) in as many days. Her 150 put her in a tie for 16th place. Junior Lauren Hassell leaped up the leaderboard on Tuesday as her 74 (+2) in the final round moved her from 45th after day one to a tie for 28th to close out her fall season.

Also turning around her first day performance, freshman Hannah Martin improved her score by eight strokes in round two. Her 158 (83-75) tied her at 42nd, the same spot teammate Natalie Samb finished. Samb recorded a 158 (79-79) in her last outing of the fall.

"As young as this team was, I think they gained a lot of valuable tournament experience," McCurdy said of his feelings on the fall season. "We know what we need to work on over the winter, which consists mostly of the mental game and staying sharp. We'll get things tightened down and fine-tuned this winter. I'm really looking forward to spring."

The previous low 36-hole record belonged to the 2005-06 Shocker squad who recorded a 619 (309-310) at the NIU Springlake Invitational. The Shocks' 300 score on Tuesday landed just one stroke shy of the 18-hole team score record held by the same 2005-06 team. They tallied a 299 at the Marilyn Smith Sunflower Invitational that season.
