Seniors Rachel York (pictured) and Olivia Martinez were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri Valley Conference announced the 2009 Scholar-Athlete men's and women's cross country teams on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with two Wichita State University athletes featured on the list.

Seniors Olivia Martinez and Rachel York represented the Shocker women following a fifth straight conference title on Saturday, Oct. 31, in Peoria, Ill. Martinez came in 17th overall out of 77 runners in a time of 19:39 while York clocked in at 19:27 to finish 13th. Martinez has only one finish outside the top 20 this year while York had a season-best showing of fifth at the JK Gold Classic and two top 15 finishes.

According to the conference, "scholar-athlete honors require athletes to meet performance standards, as the top-10 finishers at the conference championship earn all-conference honors and are included on the Scholar-Athlete team, provided they meet the set criteria, while other athletes must finish among the first 20 runners at the conference championship and hold a cumulative 3.2 GPA and be a sophomore in athletic and academic standing to earn a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete team."
