• The Wichita State women’s basketball team takes to the court for the first time in the 2009-10 season when WSU hosts its lone exhibition game against cross-town Division II-foe Newman University at 2:05 p.m., Sunday inside Charles Koch Arena. WSU’s men take on the Newman men at 7:05 p.m., on Saturday.
• The game will be broadcast live on KNSS 1330 AM with Brian Petrotta on the call. Petrotta, in his second season as the voice of WSU women’s basketball, was Sports Information Director at Newman for the 2008-09 academic year.
• The new-look Shockers return two starters and three players from a team that finished 13-18 a year ago. Eight newcomers join seniors Ashley Gladden and Marisah Henderson, and sophomore Haleigh Lankster to form the 11-player unit.
• Sunday marks the first meeting between the schools located just eight miles apart in Wichita. Newman made the move from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 2006, completing the process last September. The Jets, led by third-year head coach Tracy Anderson, were 8-18 a year ago as members of the Heartland Conference.
• Sunday’s contest marks the second-consecutive year the Shockers will play just one exhibition game. WSU is 1-0 under head coach Jody Adams in such games after a 71-52 win over the Oklahoma Flyers last November in Charles Koch Arena.
• Wichita State’s three returners each have one year of Division I experience, making the Shockers one of the least experienced teams in the nation. WSU returns just 29-percent of its offense from a year ago, and 40-percent of the rebounding from last year’s squad.
