The WSU Athletic Student Services department is located in the Downing Academic Learning Center in Charles Koch Arena. In the learning center, the student-athletes have access to over 25 computers, individual tutor rooms and an environment conducive to learning. We provide each student-athlete with guidance, resources and support that will enhance their development both academically and personally. The Student Services department is staffed by three academic coordinators, a director of compliance and the Associate Athletic Director of Compliance.
Each team is assigned an academic coordinator who is reponsible for contact with designated student-athletes, a supervision of tutorial services, and monitoring the student's academic progress among other responsibilities.
Win Mentoring: The WIN program is a structured, hands-on, individualized and intrusive study hall program that focuses on student effort rather than the number of hours required per week. The program teaches time management, organization and study skills through the setting of weekly objectives based on course requirements.
Academic Mentors are used on the front-line with students to model successful academic behavior and to assist with the implementation of the program. Academic mentors write weekly narratives on students to keep Academic Coordinators and Coaches updated on S/A progress.
Tutoring Program: The tutoring program is available to all student-athletes, and in all academic areas of study. To request tutorial help, stop by the ICAA Athletic Student Services Office and speak to your academic coordinator. If the request is approved, you will be assigned a tutor — setting up your appointments is up to you.
Study Hall: All new freshman and transfer student-athletes are required to accumulate 5 hours of supervised study hall per week in their first semester. After your first semester of attendance at Wichita State University and continuing through the completion of your fourth semester, the number of study hall hours will be determined by your academic performance the previous semester. Once a student-athlete enrolls in his/her fifth semester (except for a first-time semester), the number of study hall hours required will be determined by your previous semester's GPA or your cumulative GPA, whichever benefits the student-athlete.
The GPA standards for study hall are listed below:
• 2.75 - 2.99 GPA is 3 hours weekly
• 2.50 - 2.74 GPA is 5 hours weekly
• 2.49 GPA – Below is 8 hours weekly
Student-Athlete Orientation: Student-Athletes are welcomed to Wichita with an orientation program that provides guidance for the adjustment to college life. Student-athletes are introduced to staff, faculty, administrators, and procedures that will help them navigate their first semester, and consequently their collegiate career at WSU.
