DENVER, Colo.- The Wichita State women's tennis team defeated the Denver University Pioneers on Sunday afternoon, 4-3.
For the first time all season, the Shocker women would take the match despite dropping the doubles point. Denver was able to win two out of three doubles matches to take the lead early, 1-0.
The Shockers were able to gain their own momentum in the singles competition. The two teams split the first four singles matches, with Denver still having the lead 3-2. The Shocks did not look back after that though. Delia Damaschin defeated Elena Najera, 6-1, 7-6, and Lucia Kovalova would dig deep in the last match after going down in the first set to defeat Caroline Schnell, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, and seal the win for the Shockers. "For Lucy to dig in with all the pressure in the end was an impressive performance," Head Coach Colin Foster said.
Despite going 1-1 on the weekend, Foster was happy with his team's performance. "Delia showed such leadership this weekend, to go 4-0 (for the weekend) was huge for her confidence and obviously huge for the team win today," he said. "Yok and Lutfi continue to compete at a high level."
The Shockers will have a week off before they return home play North Texas and Cowley County on Saturday, Mar. 17 at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
