AUSTIN, Texas- The No. 58 Wichita State women's tennis team will take on No. 10 Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to start in 1 p.m.
The Longhorns (17-7, 7-2) received an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Big 12 Championship. They defeated Oklahoma State and top-seeded Texas Tech before taking down Texas A&M, 4-2, in the final match of the tournament.
Texas has two players ranked in singles play. Aeriel Ellis is ranked No. 38 in the ITA rankings, with a record of 17-16 on the season. Krista Damico is ranked No. 67 and has a record of 22-10 on the season. The doubles pair of Lina Padegimaite and Noel Scott is ranked No. 55.
The Shockers (21-5, 7-0) won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship to receive and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. They defeated Bradley, Southern Illinois, and Illinois State to take the tournament title.
Three-time Missouri Valley Conference player of the year Lutfiana Budiharto is ranked No. 81 in the latest ITA rankings. She has an overall record of 24-5 on the season, including 21-3 in the dual match season. Sophomores Veronika Blaskova and Carla Venticinque come into the match with thirteen and eleven match winning streaks respectively. Fellow sophomore Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul had a stellar 17-4 record during the spring. Senior Delia Damaschin has won eight out of her last ten contests and Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the year Lucia Kovalova has won seven out of her last ten.
The Shockers and Longhorns have only met one time before, which was in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Texas took the contest, 4-0.
