WICHITA, Kan. - As a result of a generous gift made by an anonymous donor, Wichita State Athletics will purchase iPads for every student-athlete over this academic year to assist them with all of their academic and athletic needs, Director of Athletics Eric Sexton announced today.
"Our 250 student-athletes recorded a grade point average (GPA) for 2011-12 that was approximately a 3.1," Sexton said. "Our goal has been to achieve a 3.20 or better GPA, and we believe the iPad can help student-athletes organize their busy schedules, study more efficiently on the road, and remain in constant contact with key academic personnel to ensure success.
"This use of technology will allow our student services staff to continue to develop and initiate creative ways to enhance our tutoring and mentoring aimed at enhancing academic success. In addition, our student athletes will be able to utilize the iPads for everything from scouting reports to practice and game videos."
Free academic based apps downloaded with assistance from staff in University Computing will help student-athletes manage their time, provide new tools for increased learning, make courses more engaging and help them to explore additional topics within their courses. It will allow student-athletes to have access to all of their academic needs, including textbooks through the implementation of this technology.
Applications will also allow student-athletes to take online tests and quizzes while traveling; check assignments on Blackboard; Skype a professor, tutor, learning specialist or classmates to ask questions; Skype and Panopto to listen to lectures; and will allow the student-athlete to access the library's database to conduct research in an efficient manner.
"This move is just one additional step we can make thanks to the generous donation to continue to support the academic and athletic success of our student-athletes," Sexton said.
The iPads will be on loan to the student-athletes and returned at the end of each school year.
