WICHITA, Kan.- The No. 61 Wichita State women's tennis team will head to Austin, Texas to face No. 11 Texas in their first match of ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday, January 26.
The last time Wichita State faced the Longhorns was in the NCAA Tournament at the end of the 2011-12 season, where they fell, 4-0. Texas, who will be playing their first match of the season, returns six student-athletes from the 2011-12 squad that won the Big 12 Championship and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships.
The Shockers (1-2) are coming off a 7-0 loss against No. 40 Oklahoma State on Monday. It will be their third consecutive match against a ranked opponent. Head women's tennis coach Colin Foster knows it will be another opportunity for his team to get better and build their season.
"Texas is the highest ranked team on our schedule, and it will be a good opportunity to see where we stack up against one of the nation's elite," Foster said.
Depending on the outcome of Saturday's matches, the Shockers will either face No. 69 Stephen F. Austin or No. 34 Utah on Sunday.
"Win or lose on Saturday, it is another good opportunity to see where we are at on Sunday because we will no doubt come up against another ranked team after the Texas match," added Foster.
Saturday's match against Texas will begin at 10 a.m. Live stats can be found here and results will be posted on GoShockers.com following the completion of play.
